5 Reasons to have a Digital Marketing Strategy

A Digital Marketing Strategy might sound like a boring document that you spend a lot of time on, put in a drawer and forget about for the rest of the year.

Most business owners I know don’t like spending a lot of their time on social media – they love working in their business, but when it comes to working on their business – and specifically the marketing for their business they would rather spend their time anywhere else but there.

As we move towards a new year it may be time to consider a new approach to your Digital Marketing.

The challenge

A big part of the challenge is knowing what to post and when. Most small business owners I talk to are often stumped for new ideas about how to promote their business in new ways.

Talking about your business all the time may seem repetitive to you, but getting the word out to others is the most important thing to do. Without clients or customers, you don’t really have a business – you have a hobby. Repeat customers or client referrals are the holy grail when it comes to business and gaining happy customer testimonials can help to build your credibility in a busy online market place.

It’s a jungle out there

It’s important to remember that even though you might be posting 3 – 5 times every week, not everyone will see all of your posts. Spending an hour on social media every day, on average, most people will be bombarded with over 1000 individual pieces of information.

And it won’t necessarily be your information and posts that are being presented to your target audience.

It can depend on the time of day they like to scroll, who else is competing for the attention at that time, the whims of the platform’s algorithms, what else’s businesses they have viewed recently and so on – a lot of variables that mean your post is not always going to make it into your target audience’s feed when you want it to.

Work with the algorithms

One of the best strategies to get the best chance of exposure is to post regularly, consistently and for the long haul. It’s not something you can master in a week or a month or even a year. You need to keep at it constantly. Even when you think no-one is seeing your posts.

Sounds easy, but in reality, when you are busy and exhausted or feel stretched with too many things, then it is often the Digital Marketing which gets put aside. And you lose consistency and presence and that can lead to a spiral of the phone not ringing and customers not returning. And we all know where that leads and it’s not pretty.

A Better Way

Having a Digital Marketing Strategy can take the agony out of social media, and your general business marketing and leave you free to do the things you really love to do – give you more time to work in your business, if that is what you want, or free up some time to spend time with your family and loved ones.

A great Digital Marketing Strategy simplifies the process of writing posts, developing ideas, finding images, researching keywords, updating your website and generally marketing your business in the online space.

Your Digital Marketing Strategy can also plan out any seasonal posts, identify what your website should be promoting to support your social media presence (and vice versa) and take the mental load off of your plate through the busy times.

Knowing exactly what is going to be posted and when (and why!) means you can get back to focusing on serving your target audience, your customers and clients to the best of your ability – because that benefits them as well as you!

Measuring Success

The old adage that ‘what gets measured gets done’ is just as true for your digital marketing as it is for any other activity in your business, your staff performance or your own desired outcomes.

Your strategy should enable the measurement of what is working and what isn’t. Being able to extract and understand the analytics is a whole other ball game and a good Digital Marketing Strategy will identify upfront the types of results you are looking for and identify the tools with which to measure your results quickly and easily.
